Austrian IPCEI Day 2025: AT&S Showcases Progress in Building a European Microelectronics Ecosystem
On May 20, AT&S (Austria Technologie & Systemtechnik AG), the Styrian microelectronics leader, hosted the Austrian IPCEI Day 2025 at its headquarters in Leoben. The event brought together numerous Austrian companies and research institutions that play a key role in shaping a competitive and resilient European microelectronics ecosystem under the IPCEI framework.
Participants showcased the progress of their current research initiatives and had the exclusive opportunity to visit AT&S’s new state-of-the-art IC substrate production facility with integrated research center in Hinterberg.
A Milestone for AT&S and IPCEI ME/CT
“The new competence center in Leoben, currently in the final phase of process qualification, is set to officially open in June 2025,” stated Hannes Voraberger, Head of Research and Development at AT&S and host of the event. “This facility is a cornerstone of our contribution to the IPCEI on Microelectronics and Communication Technologies and reflects years of innovation and strategic collaboration.”
Organized in collaboration with key Austrian IPCEI ME/CT partners, AVL List GmbH, Ebner Group, Infineon Technologies Austria AG, NXP Semiconductors, and Silicon Austria Labs, the event served as a vibrant hub for knowledge sharing and industry networking. It featured expert presentations on cutting-edge R&D projects and included participation from the Austrian Ministries of Innovation and Economic Affairs.
Europe Moving Forward
“The IPCEI initiative enables the rapid translation of high-tech European innovations into market-ready solutions,” noted Martin Mischitz, IPCEI ME/CT Project Manager at Infineon and member of the Facilitation Group. “It strengthens industrial cooperation and ensures that knowledge generated is shared across universities, SMEs, research institutions, and start-ups, creating a win-win for the whole European economy.”
AT&S’s new facility positions the company as the first European manufacturer of advanced IC substrates, essential for next-generation, high-performance microchips. This investment will not only generate high-skilled jobs in Austria but also contribute to Europe's technological sovereignty and economic prosperity. The plant is poised to become a global hub for IC substrate production, targeting 2-nanometer chip technologies, virtual system development, and energy-efficient semiconductor solutions.
“IPCEI is a strategic framework for driving innovation in the Austrian and European semiconductor industries,” emphasized Ferdinand Bell, Chairman of the IPCEI ME/CT Facilitation Group. “It enables breakthrough ideas to become competitive products and helps Europe establish a strong position in the global semiconductor landscape.”
